G's Earn Victory in Must-Win Home Match

Los Angeles, Calif. — As far as Fan Appreciation Nights go, it couldn’t have gone better for the LA Galaxy.

Marco Reus led the way with a trio of assists, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano tallied a header in his return to the starting 11, and Sergi Roberto scored his first Galaxy goal in a 4-1 home demolition of visiting Austin FC on October 31, 2026. The controlled, if somewhat wasteful win was vital, as nothing short of three points would have put the Galaxy’s playoff destiny out of their own hands.

Instead, LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney’s team took care of business from the first whistle in a professional victory they absolutely dared not drop points in. More importantly, it showed LA can win the necessary matches on their fixture list if they are to make it to the postseason.

“Yeah, it was good,” Vanney said of his team’s performance. The Galaxy boss had the benefit of starting all three DP’s for the first time today, and it showed.

“You know, I think some of that comes from the group of players as well that we have. Right, there's quality on the field. They take care of some of those moments and some of the business.”

“I think guys now are starting to fit into their roles and starting to connect together. And so, you know, I could say today we didn't have a great day today, but we still were able to win four-one. And so that's good. That means, you know, for us that when we have a great day, we can be really, really good.”

Starting Brightly

The Galaxy set the tone early.

An errant Ilie Sánchez pass was picked off by Harbor Miller, who advanced on the right channel and found João Klauss in the middle of the box. The Galaxy DP used soft feet to control the ball and pass into the bottom right of the net. The goal, Klauss’ 10th of the season, put the Galaxy up 1-0 inside 10 minutes.

Austin Goalkeeper Damian Las made several saves to keep the Galaxy at bay, but try as Las might, he could not stem the tide indefinitely. Reus made sure of it.

After a botched Verde clearance in the 38th minute, Miller found Reus on the right wing, and the former German international sent a clipped pass into the area. Incredibly, the diminutive Lozano out-jumped the entire Austin defense and headed it home to give the Galaxy a 2-0 lead. The goal marked Lozano's first home goal of the season.

For a returning Lozano, the goal was a welcome sight. But for the Galaxy, Chucky’s reintegration and return to the scoresheet could give them another threat as they try to put everything together before their final match and any potential playoff run.

LA Galaxy Winger Hirving "Chucky" Lozano scored in his return to the starting 11, in the Galaxy's 4-1 home win over Austin FC on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Although Lozano lasted just 45 minutes, his cameo was more than encouraging.

“The truth is I’m very happy to have gotten the opportunity to play,” Lozano told the Sporting Tribune. “I was a little bit afraid because of the injury, but as the minutes went by, I gained more confidence and, well, thankfully, I was able to score, and the important thing is that we added three points that are very important.”

Two Halves, Two Goals in Each

Three minutes after the restart, Robert Taylor contributed to the rout. Reus found the substitute in the middle of the Austin box, who kept his composure to blast the ball into the roof of the net for the 3-0 score.

The afternoon's only notable blemish came six minutes later. The Galaxy defense gave Austin Midfielder Ervin Torres too much space, and the 18-year-old let loose with a 25-yard curling effort that LA Galaxy Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski could only flail at to make it 3-1.

But that's as close as Austin got on the day. The Galaxy took the goal on the chin and immediately set upon scoring another. And it would be Reus who would set the table once again.

Klauss started the play, and his volleyed pass found Reus in stride. Reus headed the pass down to Roberto, who made no mistake in adding to the lead to make it 4-1 for the G’s.

The win temporarily puts the Galaxy seventh in the Western Conference table, with Sunday matches left to play. It means LA is unbeaten at home in eight matches and unbeaten in four games in all competitions.

It was also exactly the kind of response Galaxy fans and the maker of the first goal, Miller, wanted to see.

“You know, you see us dropping those points to some of the teams lower on the table earlier in the season, and I think now it's like, okay, hey, this is not acceptable,” Miller explained of the early-season setbacks.

“We've learned from those, and I think it's been huge to get on top of games early for us. You know, we always end up having to come back or having to make the game much more difficult on ourselves. So I think in a night like tonight, we put away some chances early.”

Taking Care of Business

In a season where the Galaxy have been inconsistent and dropped points to teams much lower in the table, the professional victory was gratifying and a lift for an LA team that faces another must-win next week on Decision Day.

The Galaxy will need a repeat performance next week as they play for their playoff lives and try to extend their season away at Real Salt Lake. RSL is currently just two points back of the Galaxy, and a win will see them leapfrog them and potentially keep them out of the postseason.

It is simple for LA, though. Win, and they’re in to the postseason. It also sends them into the playoffs in potentially their best form of the campaign.

“I think we’ll be able to advance,” Lozano stated confidently when asked about Decision Day.

“We have a great team. We hope everything comes out in our favor, and well, if we make it to the playoffs, I think it’ll be a different story.”

The Galaxy and Real Salt Lake face off on Decision Day, next Saturday, November 7, at 4:00 p.m. for a postseason berth.
