Titans' Risky Trade Gamble Puts Future on Draft Picks

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Tennessee’s Risky Trade Strategy Puts Pressure on Future Draft Picks

Dallas gave up Micah Parsons to the Packers for a similar package, but also received defensive lineman Kenny Clarke in return. The Rams gave up a package comparable to what the Browns surrendered for Miles Garrett, but they also received Jared Burt.

For Tennessee, the strategy will only work if the organization makes the right choices with its draft picks over the next two years. That is far from guaranteed, as first-round picks do not always work out.

The organization may believe it has no other choice. After another difficult season, the current regime could finish 3-14 or 4-13. If the team does not improve immediately next year, jobs could be at risk. The Titans cannot afford to struggle for several years, so management may feel compelled to make changes now.

This could also signal a broader shift around the league. Struggling teams may become more willing to make trades because they fear remaining uncompetitive the following season. Those organizations may feel they must add future assets immediately or risk being stuck in the same position.

However, Tennessee has also sent a clear message to its fan base. At 1-6, trading the player who has served as the face of the franchise suggests that the current season is over and that next year could also be difficult. Unlike the Browns and Cowboys, Tennessee did not receive an established player in return and must instead hope its future selections succeed.

Miami faced a similar problem after trading several players without receiving meaningful immediate help. The Dolphins entered the season with little to show in return, highlighting the danger of relying entirely on future assets.
