Bears Go All In With Blockbuster Jeffrey Simmons Trade
The Bears are pushing all in this season by acquiring defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons for two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick. It is a steep price, but if Chicago reaches or wins the Super Bowl, the cost will not matter.
Simmons is viewed as a franchise player and future Hall of Famer. Aaron Donald was identified as the only defensive tackle of the past decade who was better. The Bears paid heavily, so the move needs to pay off, but this is also an ideal season for them to take that chance.
The NFC appears wide open. Kansas City, Buffalo and Baltimore are not standing in Chicago’s way, while San Francisco was described as the primary obstacle in the conference. The NFC East and South were criticized, the West was viewed as having one top team, and the Bears’ division was called potentially the best in the conference.
Simmons immediately addresses a major weakness for Chicago. He recorded 11 sacks last season, while the Bears’ entire defensive front combined for 10.5. His presence should make the defense tougher to run against and help limit the play-action opportunities opponents could previously exploit.
Chris Jones was offered as a comparison for the type of impact Simmons could make. Another comparison was Warren Sapp in his prime: a dominant interior defender who could stop the run, command double teams and disrupt an offense from the middle. Simmons was placed just below Donald among the elite players at the position.
The trade also makes sense for Tennessee. Simmons was described as unhappy, while the Titans were not expected to contend this year or next. Acquiring two first-round selections gives Tennessee valuable assets, even if one of those picks lands near the end of the round should Chicago win the Super Bowl.
Ultimately, the deal was viewed as beneficial for both teams. Tennessee secured a strong return, while Chicago added a game-changing defender for a potential championship run. The greater risk belongs to the Bears, but they clearly believe Simmons was the missing piece.
