The biggest question remains: Can a mid-tier seed like Nebraska or Iowa continue their Cinderella runs, or will the heavyweight efficiency of Houston and Purdue finally take over? The road to the Final Four in Indianapolis goes through these 16 squads—and the margin for error is now zero.

Sweet 16 Power Rankings: Why Arizona Is the New Team to Beat

The first weekend of March Madness lived up to the "Mayhem" moniker, but the dust has settled on a redefined field. While Duke survived a massive scare against #16 Siena and Houston looks to capitalize on a gutted South region, a new alpha has emerged.

Based on opening-weekend dominance, injury fallout, and advanced metric shifts, we’ve re-ranked the remaining 16 teams. From Arizona’s leap to the #1 spot to St. John’s historic resurgence, here is how the contenders stack up heading into the second weekend.

1. Arizona
In terms of overall seed order heading into the tournament, the Wildcats have leapfrogged the Blue Devils after their performances on the opening weekend. They have continued to look like the most complete team in college basketball over the past few weeks, and they showed some grit by hanging on to get past Utah State on Sunday night. With Jaden Bradley playing like the best closer in the country, they feel like such a safe bet to get the job done when the going gets tough late in games.
2. Michigan
The Wolverines took some early jabs from Saint Louis in the Round of 32, but ultimately landed the knockout blow in a 23-point victory over the Billikens. The backcourt has held its own, and Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara continue to prove why they are the best frontcourt pairing in the country. It's going to take a monumental performance from someone in the Midwest region to keep Michigan from reaching the national semifinal in Indianapolis.
3. Duke
In a game that should have been the afterthought of the Thursday afternoon slate in the opening round, Duke had the entire nation tuned in as they trailed #16 Siena for the first 35 minutes of regulation. The Blue Devils got their act together and mustered out a six-point victory, but questions about the backcourt that popped up since losing Caleb Foster due to injury now seem to have some merit. They are still a favorite to make the Final Four, but St. John's will be the second-toughest matchup they have faced in over three months.
4. Houston
It was a dream opening weekend for Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars. They took care of business with back-to-back 31-point victories, all while Iowa knocked out top-seeded Florida in the second round. All the Cougars have to do now is hold serve as a favorite in their own city for two games to punch their ticket to the national championship. Their stout defense faces perhaps its biggest test of the season against Illinois's historically efficient offense.
5. Purdue
The Boilermakers were under a lot of pressure from the public after claiming the Big Ten Tournament title and receiving one of the more favorable opening draws. Matt Painter and Co. took care of business by pushing past a pesky Miami team in the second round despite facing a seven-point deficit late in the first half. It was encouraging to see them find a way to win against a solid opponent, even when centerpiece guard Braden Smith had an off day.
6. Illinois
This Illinois offense is becoming laughable. They have scoring weapons at every position and an efficiency level that keeps them in every game, no matter the margin. They have not been tested yet in the tournament, but that will surely change with Thursday night's date with Houston. It's a tough draw as a virtual road game for the Fighting Illini, but they have the horses on offense to stuff any defense in a locker for 40 minutes.
7. Iowa State
Iowa State felt like a legitimate national championship contender, but the loss of Joshua Jefferson takes them out of the conversation until further notice. With X-rays coming back negative following the ankle injury, there is a chance that the Second-Team All-American could be back for Friday night's matchup with Tennessee. If he is back, then the Cyclones deserve to be fifth in these rankings. But until we see how he looks out on that court, they are stuck at seventh and lack that alpha on the court that every national championship contender needs.
8. UConn
Alex Karaban picked a perfect time to post his career high, pouring in 27 points in the team's second-round victory over UCLA on Sunday night. He willed the team to victory after going back and forth with the Bruins for most of the game until the Huskies pulled away late. The last thing that the tournament wants to see is a UConn team getting the ball rolling. If Silas Demary can continue to get healthy and the sharpshooting pairing of Braylon Mullins and Solo Ball can start knocking down shots, then this team could disrupt things in the East region.
9. St. John's
What a win for St. John's in an ugly one over Kansas to reach the second weekend for the first time this millennium. Despite not scoring for the first 39:59 of the game, Dylan Darling stepped up when the team needed him and put up a game-winning layup to send the Red Storm into the Sweet 16. A much taller task awaits in a date against Duke, but there are few teams playing as well as the Johnnies over the past two months.
10. Michigan State
After an early exit in the Big Ten Tournament and an uneventful first-round win over North Dakota State, it feels like Michigan State was entering the second round a bit under the radar. They notched a strong win over Louisville to now set up a date with UConn, where Tom Izzo will seek back-to-back Elite Eight appearances for the first time in over a decade.
11. Nebraska
We have entered uncharted territory for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. After steamrolling Troy for the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win, they went on to narrowly escape Vanderbilt and set up a date with Big Ten rival Iowa for a spot in the Elite Eight. With the Florida Gators out of the picture, a trip to the Final Four has never felt more realistic in Lincoln. Could Fred Hoiberg immortalize himself by punching a ticket to Indianapolis?
12. Alabama
Alabama arguably had the tournament's best performance thus far, a 25-point win over Texas Tech that was over within the first 10 minutes. The Crimson Tide scorched the nets by knocking down 19 triples, all while averaging 1.3 points per possession in the victory. Labaron Philon took over full-time duties on the ball and was able to dish out 12 assists. Maybe this team doesn't need Aden Holloway to be a dark horse to reach the Final Four?
13. Arkansas
The Razorbacks became the ultimate beneficiary of High Point being the only 12-seed or higher to win in the first round, getting to face the Panthers in the second round, where they handled business and punched their ticket to San Jose. Darius Acuff Jr. has been as advertised with 60 points through their two games, now sitting at 30.2 points per game since the start of the SEC Tournament. There may not be another player in the country right now that you would want in a big-time spot.
14. Tennessee
If someone other than Acuff is capable of dragging his team to the Final Four with some heroics, it may be Tennessee's Ja'Kobi Gillespie. The senior is playing his best basketball at the perfect time, pouring in 50 points and dishing out 15 assists across their first two games of the tournament. If the Maryland transfer continues to play like this, the Volunteers are live to beat anybody remaining in this field.
15. Iowa
Ben McCollum has proved to the nation that he belongs in the conversation of the top ten coaches in the sport right now. That may feel premature to some, but there is zero denying how much of a winner he is, no matter where he goes after dominating the Division II level at Northwest Missouri State, and then bringing Drake and now Iowa to new heights. Sunday's win over Florida was a coaching masterclass, and there is no reason to believe they can't pull off something similar over Nebraska on Thursday night.
16. Texas
There was never any doubt that this Texas team had talent. It was whether Sean Miller could get all his pieces to fit together and play through each other, with four newcomers in his current seven-man rotation. The team's average of 2.75 years of Division I experience has shown through in all three of their NCAA Tournament games this year, as they have clearly looked the more composed team in the final minutes of each win. If Miller could somehow get the Longhorns to the Final Four, it would be one of the best coaching jobs of this century.
