Thunder Shine as Spurs' Bench Issues Fuel Trade Talk

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Sporting Tribune Today

Thunder Impress as Spurs’ Depth and Draymond Green Fit Spark Debate

Oklahoma City looked like a team with a chip on its shoulder after the way last season ended. Jared McCain and Shai were among the standouts in the opening matchup, while the Spurs raised more questions despite it being only the first game.

The biggest concern for San Antonio is its bench. A key source of firepower has moved into the starting lineup, leaving uncertainty about who can provide a consistent force among the reserves. Staggering minutes could help, but the roster still appears to need reinforcements after a quiet offseason. Luke Kornet was singled out as a player the Spurs may need to upgrade.

Several possible additions were discussed, including Rui, Tobias Harris and, jokingly, Joel Embiid. Brook Lopez was also strongly preferred over Kornet. Another suggestion was Stewart from Memphis, described as a younger enforcer who could provide toughness.

The boldest proposal was Draymond Green. The argument was that the Spurs need someone opponents fear, particularly after the skirmish involving Wemby. Green could bring an edge, protect his teammates and add the winning presence that may have been missing from a team that fell short last season.

There would be major obstacles to such a move. Green and Steph Curry may finish their careers with the Warriors, making a departure difficult to imagine. Still, it was argued that Green could want another opportunity to win with a different organization and demonstrate the impact he can have away from Golden State.

The potential basketball fit remains a concern. Green would likely start, but questions were raised about how he would function alongside Wemby. Golden State’s motion offense often puts Green at the top of the perimeter, directing traffic and initiating dribble handoffs. It is unclear whether Wemby would thrive moving off the ball in that type of system, even if Green’s toughness and leadership addressed other needs for San Antonio.
