Suns Look to Exploit Portland’s Backcourt in Season Opener
The Suns open their season on the road against a new-look Portland Trail Blazers team featuring John Morant and returning fan favorite Damian Lillard. Despite the excitement surrounding Portland, the 2.5-point spread suggests the teams are relatively even. If the game were in Phoenix, the Suns might be favored by four or five points.
Portland’s backcourt of Morant and Lillard offers plenty of explosiveness and scoring, but it also gives up size. Devin Booker and Jalen Green could capitalize on that with their combination of size and offensive ability, particularly against two players who are not known for their defense.
Denny Abdia could also play an important role for Portland. The Suns are familiar with his impact after he scored 40 points in a road victory over Phoenix during last year’s playing tournament.
Portland has shifted from being a defensive team led by Abdia to an offensive team trying to keep pace with its opponents. That could create an opening for the Suns if they lean on the defensive principles that defined them last season.
The Trail Blazers also have a new head coach, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the team. There is excitement about Portland, especially with Lillard wearing a Trail Blazers uniform again after more than three years, but questions remain about how the new roster will fit together and whether its weaknesses will show on the court.
