Pat Murphy’s Leadership and Milwaukee’s Team-First Culture
Pat Murphy’s players approach the game the way it used to be played. After winning two NL Manager of the Year awards, he deserves a third for the way he has coached this team.
Pitchers and position players seemingly come out of nowhere and contribute in major moments, largely because Murphy trusts them to execute what is asked of them. Milwaukee’s success feels like a complete team effort.
Christian Yelich, Jackson Chourio and Misiorowski may receive much of the attention, but the team has an esprit de corps that few other MLB clubs possess. The dugout appears to be low on egos. Chourio and Misiorowski carry themselves like members of the team rather than stars.
Yelich embodies that culture. He has embraced Milwaukee and set an example for his teammates. Although he did not have his best season, he is having an excellent World Series and personifies what the team is about.
If Milwaukee wins the World Series, attending the parade may be unavoidable. When the team lost the World Series in 1982, fans still packed Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee for a parade. It is difficult to imagine the celebration if the team wins it all.
