Volkanovski Discusses Retirement as Peter Young Opens the Door for an O’Malley Rematch

Alexander Volkanovski has faced questions about retirement after being knocked out by Islam. In his previous fight, the Australian retained the featherweight title by defeating Mazlov.

After the fight, Volkanovski said he wants one more bout against Justin Gichi, followed by a super fight before retiring. Although he appears to have some gas left in the tank, fighting too long can be risky. Once a fighter begins thinking about retirement and loses that competitive drive, it can be difficult to regain.

Another notable result was Peter Young defeating Marab Devistali to reclaim the bantamweight belt. The result could create an opportunity for Sean O’Malley, who previously defeated Young, to fight for the title.

A third fight with Marab would have been less appealing because O’Malley lost to him twice. A trilogy makes more sense when the fighters are tied at one victory apiece. With Young holding the belt, O’Malley’s previous win over him gives people a reason to call for another matchup.

O’Malley also calls himself an honorary Mexican because he is married to a Mexican woman and they have a daughter. He says he fights like a Mexican and is known for his movement.
