Vittorio Pozzo: Italy's Football Maestro

Italy's 1938 World Cup victory was vividly encapsulated in a striking photograph where all eyes are drawn to Vittorio Pozzo, the man holding the Jules Rimet trophy. Pozzo was the architect behind Italy's consecutive World Cup wins in 1934 and 1938. He is widely recognized for creating the Metodo, also known as the WW or 2-3-2-3 formation, which laid the groundwork for Italy's emergence as the first defensive powerhouse in international football.

His career was marked by ingenuity and adaptability, both as a coach and tactician. During his time living in Manchester and playing in Switzerland, Pozzo crafted the Metodo, enhancing the strategic dimensions of football. His tenure as Italy's coach, which included stints at different times, notably from 1929 to 1948, was distinguished by significant achievements including an Olympic gold medal at the Berlin Olympics in addition to his World Cup successes.

Pozzo also had a profound impact on his players, notably converting his captain Giuseppe Meazza from a striker to an offensive midfielder, further demonstrating his strategic acumen. The transformation helped form a potent partnership that was crucial for Italy's 1938 campaign. Beyond football, Pozzo maintained a career in journalism, contributing to La Stampa, a Turin newspaper, which underlines the multi-faceted nature of his life and career.

Known as Il Vecchio Maestro, or the old master, Pozzo first coached the national team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, marking the beginning of an illustrious and multifaceted career that left a lasting legacy on international football.
