Son Heung-min: Celebrating Asia’s Storied Football Legacy

Son Heung-min: Celebrating Asia’s Storied Football Legacy

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Football Nation

Son Heung-min: A Football Icon from Asia

Son Heung-min is considered the best player in the history of Asian football. This South Korean legend has achieved remarkable accolades, including being named AFC Asian International Player of the Year seven times. Over 15 years, he has showcased his impressive skills at top football clubs in Germany and England.

Son's football career began with his extraordinary pace and trickery as a winger, which caught everyone's attention. As he developed, he incorporated more goals into his game, culminating with him winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2022. Among his many spectacular goals, one against Burnley stood out, earning him the prestigious Puskás Award in 2020.

More than his skills on the field, Son's leadership qualities set him apart. Since 2019, he has served as the captain of the South Korean national team, and in 2024, he took on the captaincy of his club. His leadership has been instrumental in cultivating a cohesive and motivated team environment.

Son's perseverance and dedication to his team are evident by his commitment to Tottenham Hotspur, where he played a pivotal role in winning the Europa League in 2025. As the new club captain, he led the team to victory, asserting his belief from day one in their potential to win the title.

Prior to his success in England, Son moved to Germany at age 16 and quickly made his mark by becoming the youngest Bundesliga goalscorer for Hamburg. This achievement was followed by a record transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, and subsequently to Spurs, making him the most expensive Asian player in football history. After forming a formidable strike partnership with Harry Kane, Son assumed a leadership role following Kane's transfer to Bayern Munich. He proved his mettle by pushing his team to the Champions League final in 2019 and later capturing the Europa League title in Bilbao.

Despite his club success, Son and the South Korean national team have faced challenges on the international stage. Though they have consistently qualified for the World Cup, victories have been few. The team's performance in the Asian Cup has also been underwhelming, with only one appearance in the finals in recent years.

Despite these setbacks, Son's remarkable talent and leadership on and off the field have left an indelible mark on football, making him a true icon of the sport.
