Riyad Mahrez: From League Debut to Iconic Soccer Figure

Riyad Mahrez: From League Debut to Iconic Soccer Figure

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From The Contenders

Riyad Mahrez: From Humble Beginnings to Football Icon

In January 2014, Riyad Mahrez was a lesser-known 23-year-old French footballer playing in Ligue de Folle Ave. By year's end, after a remarkable rise, he found himself representing Algeria at the World Cup and securing promotion to the English Premier League with Leicester City. By May 2016, Mahrez had played a pivotal role in one of the most astounding underdog stories, as Leicester City clinched the Premier League title, with Mahrez being named the best footballer in England by his peers.

His accolades didn't stop there, as he was also honored with the best player in Africa award by the Confederation of African Football. During his acceptance speech, Mahrez expressed gratitude towards his teammates from both Leicester City and the Algerian national team, his managers, and notably dedicated his achievements to his family and supporters in Africa and around the world.

Mahrez's career trajectory continued upwards with a high-profile move to Manchester City, where he significantly contributed to the club during one of its most successful periods, securing multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League. His international career, however, had a rocky start due to local media skepticism and allegations of impropriety, which were only dispelled after his standout performance as captain during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where Algeria triumphed, marking only their second title.

Now an established icon, Mahrez continued to represent Algeria, surpassing 100 international caps and preparing to lead his team in North America for his final world stage appearance. Despite nearing the end of his career, Mahrez portrayed a renewed vigour after joining Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, demonstrating his unyielding passion and determination, leading his team to their first AFC Champions League title in 2025.

With the 2026 World Cup looming, it may represent the last opportunity to celebrate Mahrez's illustrious career, which has been marked not only by his skill on the field but also by his resilience and ability to inspire on and off the pitch.
