Seattle vs. Denver Preview: Why the Seahawks Are Slight Favorites

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Seattle Backed to Control Denver as Both Teams Face Offensive Questions

Seattle is the pick in tonight’s game, with Sam Darnold’s history of responding after losses supporting the case. Over his last nine games, Darnold is at least 6-1 against the spread following a loss. He is also plus money not to throw an interception after emphasizing the importance of protecting the football.

Denver’s injuries at cornerback could create a significant opportunity for Jackson Smith and Jigba, who may receive a dozen targets or more. Seattle’s running game behind Wilson appears good enough, while its defense remains strong. With Bo Nix struggling, this is not expected to become a 35-28 shootout. Instead, Seattle could control the game from start to finish and win by a score around 27-17.

Seattle’s inconsistent running game remains a concern. The team has not consistently played with a lead in recent games, preventing it from controlling the tempo and putting additional pressure on the defense. Although that defense is about as good as it gets, injuries have affected the backfield. Emmanuel Wilson is viewed as a low-end average running back, but he is currently the primary option because George Holai has struggled with ball security, including a fumble in his own end zone.

Darnold must also improve. If he wants to avoid being labeled a game manager who simply gets his team to the finish line, he must show that he can win games rather than merely avoid losing them.

Denver’s inconsistency may involve both the play-calling situation with Davis Webb and Sean Payton and the performance of Nix. Switching play callers creates challenges, especially when a head coach who also calls plays is watching over the process. The addition of Jaylen Waddle also creates pressure to restructure an offense that hosted the AFC Championship game a year ago.

There are further concerns about Denver’s running game and a defense that has not been as reliable. Still, the team is 5 and 3 and 2 through five weeks, with losses to the Chiefs and 49ers. Denver has not looked great, but it is getting results. Good teams find ways to win without playing their best and become difficult to beat when they do reach their highest level.

Tonight’s winner could emerge with considerable confidence, provided the performance looks convincing. The loser, meanwhile, may leave the game with more questions than answers.
