NFL's Top Defenses Going into Week 4
Lockdown Lagoon: Power Ranking the Top 18 NFL Defenses After Week 3

Three weeks of the 2026 NFL season are in the books, and Week 3 delivered massive tectonic shifts across the defensive landscape. Expanding our rankings to the top 18 NFL defenses, we dig into point suppression, total yardage, pass-rush pressure rates, sack totals, and run fits to declare the league's elite shutdown units right now.
18. Carolina Panthers (1-2)
Carolina grabs the final spot on our expanded board thanks to an elite perimeter secondary and unrelenting pass rush. The Panthers field the league's 5th-best passing defense, surrendering just 172.3 passing yards per game. With 7 sacks and a staggering 38 pressures (32.8% pressure rate), Carolina’s defense forces opposing passers into early throws.
17. Atlanta Falcons (1-2)
Atlanta crashes the top 18 behind the single most dominant run defense in football. The Falcons lead the entire NFL by allowing a microscopic 47.7 rushing yards per game, holding offenses to 310.7 total yards per game (8th in NFL). Backed by 34 pressures (25.0% pressure rate) and 5 sacks, Atlanta's front seven neutralizes ground attacks on first down.
16. Tennessee Titans (0-3)
Despite winless struggles on offense, Tennessee’s defense earns a spot at No. 16 on pure statistical merit. The Titans rank 10th in scoring defense at 19.7 points per game (59 total points allowed), giving up 315.3 total yards per game and a stingy 189.0 passing yards per game. With 6 sacks and 21 pressures, this unit plays well enough to keep them in every contest.
15. Baltimore Ravens (2-1)
Baltimore enters the top 15 after pulling out a wild 34-31 victory over Dallas in Rio. The Ravens allow 321.3 total yards per game and 216.3 passing yards per game, yielding 26.0 points per game. While they've given up points in shootouts, their front-seven talent and 6 sacks give them baseline staying power.
14. Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)
Despite falling 30-27 to Pittsburgh, Al Golden’s defense remains a backfield threat. The Bengals tie for second in the NFL with 10 sacks and hold a 27.9% pressure rate, giving up 21.0 points per game (63 total points allowed). Their ability to collapse pockets without heavy blitzing keeps them dangerous.
13. Denver Broncos (2-1)
Vance Joseph's defense delivered when it mattered most, pulling out a 30-26 SNF win over the Rams. Denver has accumulated 8 sacks, 4 interceptions, and a 22.6% pressure rate through three weeks, allowing 23.3 points per game while making game-winning defensive stands in back-to-back weeks.
12. New York Giants (2-1)
Big Blue enters the power rankings following a grimy 12-7 victory over Tennessee. The Giants rank ninth in scoring defense at 18.3 points per game (55 total points allowed) and surrender 329.0 total yards per game. John Harbaugh’s group locked down the red zone and kept Tennessee out of the end zone until the final frame.
11. Los Angeles Rams (1-2)
Los Angeles dropped a 30-26 Sunday Night Football thriller to Denver, but Sean McVay’s unit continues to put up stingy yardage numbers. The Rams rank third in total defense (272.7 yards per game) and fourth in pass defense (171.3 passing yards per game), giving up 21.0 points per game. With Aaron Donald leading the interior, this defense has huge secondary potential once fully meshed.
10. New York Jets (1-2)
Gang Green took a 31-24 loss to Detroit, but their per-down efficiency remains upper-echelon. The Jets rank second in total defense (258.3 yards per game) and third in pass defense (171.0 passing yards per game), surrendering 20.3 points per game. Generating 8 sacks and a 23.4% pressure rate, this front line remains tough to move the ball against.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1)
Steel City's defense prevailed late in Week 3, edging Cincinnati 30-27 on a game-winning field goal. Pittsburgh allows 20.0 points per game (60 total points allowed) and ranks seventh in total defense at 305.7 yards per game. Driven by T.J. Watt, the Steelers have racked up 8 sacks and 4 takeaways, continuously delivering crunch-time stops.
8. New England Patriots (1-2)
Even after a 35-6 road loss to Jacksonville, Mike Vrabel’s defense remains statistically strong, since many of those Jags points came off turnovers. The Patriots rank sixth in scoring defense at 17.0 points per game (51 total points allowed), fifth in total defense (278.3 yards per game), and second in pass defense (170.0 passing yards per game). With 7 sacks on the season, New England's structural discipline keeps them in the top ten.
7. Las Vegas Raiders (3-0)
Las Vegas remains undefeated following a gritty 35-27 road win over New Orleans. The Raiders tie for fourth in the NFL with 10 sacks and hold the league's second-highest pressure rate (36.3%), trailing only Minnesota. Giving up 18.0 points per game (8th in NFL) and boasting an league-best 9 takeaways (+5 turnover differential), Robert Leonard’s group is turning games into chaotic backfield scrambles.
6. Chicago Bears (2-1)
Statements don't get much louder than Chicago's 27-7 domination of Philadelphia on Monday Night Football. The Bears crash the rankings at No. 6, holding the Eagles to a single touchdown while ranking seventh in scoring defense at 17.7 points per game (53 total points allowed). Backed by a 32.7% pressure rate and 7 sacks, Ben Johnson's squad plays with mean-streak physicality.
5. San Francisco 49ers (3-0)
San Francisco stays unblemished after holding off division rival Arizona in a 36-30 win. The 49ers yield 16.7 points per game (50 total points allowed) and 313.0 total yards per game. Generating a 25.2% pressure rate alongside 6 sacks, Fred Warner and this front seven continue to dictate terms at the line of scrimmage.
4. Seattle Seahawks (2-1)
Despite dropping a wild 33-31 shootout to Washington, Seattle’s underlying metrics remain ridiculous. The Seahawks hold the NFL's #1 total defense (228.7 yards allowed per game) and #1 pass defense (141.7 passing yards allowed per game), while tying Kansas City and San Francisco at 16.7 points allowed per game. With 7 sacks and 4 interceptions, the "Darkside" secondary remains elite.
3. Kansas City Chiefs (3-0)
Steve Spagnuolo’s defense continues to perform like a championship anchor, suffocating the Dolphins 24-10 in South Florida. Kansas City ranks third in scoring defense, allowing 16.7 points per game (50 total points allowed) while holding opponents to 278.0 total yards per game (4th in NFL) and 178.3 passing yards per game. They compress passing lanes and force teams into long third-down scenarios week after week.
2. Minnesota Vikings (3-0)
Minnesota rockets near the top of the board after a physical 23-16 victory over Tampa Bay. The Vikings rank second in scoring defense at 13.7 points per game (41 total points allowed) while leading the entire NFL in both sacks (14) and pressure rate (40.3%). With 4 interceptions and relentless interior pressure, Brian Flores' defense is an absolute nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.
1. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1)
Jacksonville takes over the #1 overall spot after delivering an absolute defensive masterclass in Week 3, routing New England 35-6. The Jaguars lead the entire NFL in scoring defense, surrendering a microscopic 12.0 points per game (38 total points allowed). Backed by 8 sacks, a 24.5% pressure rate, and elite red-zone lockout efficiency, Liam Coen’s group is currently the hardest unit in football to score on.
