Georgia-Alabama Pass Interference Call Sparks Debate

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Pushing The Odds with Matt Perrault

Georgia’s Victory Does Not Erase a Missed Pass Interference Call

Was it pass interference? Yes, it was. On Keyland Russell’s throw to Rico Scott near the end zone, KJ Boldin ran him over. The play should have drawn a flag.

Georgia still won the game, and the missed call does not diminish that victory or change the final score. Georgia won 20-17, giving Kirby Smart the victory he had been desperate for. His emotional pregame speech was leaked online, showing the intensity surrounding a matchup between two teams that do not like each other.

The teams could meet again in the postseason or possibly in the SEC championship game. The missed call could also matter from the committee’s standpoint, but that remains uncertain.

Calling the play a mistake is not an attempt to discredit Georgia’s win. There were many other plays Alabama could have made to avoid needing the officials to get that call right. Missed calls are an unfortunate part of sports.

Gunner Stockton is a very talented college quarterback, supported by a strong running game and defense. Georgia delivered the performance it needed and earned the victory.

However, Alabama should have received a pass interference call and an opportunity to take possession inside the five-yard line with a chance to win the game. Georgia won, but the officials missed that call.
