College Football Playoff Rankings Spark Major Debate

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

College Football Playoff Rankings Spark Debate Over Indiana, Texas and UCLA

The College Football Playoff committee released its first top 12 and top 25 rankings, with Miami and Georgia leading the way. Utah, one of the undefeated teams discussed, landed at No. 3, while one-loss Indiana was placed fourth.

Indiana’s position drew immediate criticism. Despite the program’s success last year, its current résumé was questioned. Indiana lost 19-15 to Ohio State on October 17, and its past three victories included wins by seven points or fewer against teams such as Michigan and Minnesota. Its nonconference opponents were North Texas, Howard and Western Kentucky, and it has not defeated a team ranked by the committee.

Alabama and Kentucky, both 7-1, followed in the top group. Kentucky was credited with having the strongest schedule among the teams discussed in the top 10. Head coach Will Stein, the former Oregon offensive coordinator, was also praised for his work, reinforcing the importance of coaching in college football.

UCLA, the only undefeated Big 10 team, was ranked eighth despite playing with a backup quarterback. The placement suggested that the committee was not as impressed with UCLA as it was with Utah. BYU was also viewed as deserving a higher position than both UCLA and Texas after suffering only one difficult road loss.

Texas at No. 7 created another major point of disagreement. The team’s biggest win was described as a comeback victory over Ohio State in a game it was fortunate to win. Texas could still justify a playoff spot by winning its remaining games, but its losses were considered too poor to support such a high initial ranking.

Notre Dame remained inside the playoff field at No. 12. A loss to Miami would likely allow another team to replace it, but winning out against the rest of its schedule could keep Notre Dame in the top 12 despite concerns about its résumé and lack of major victories.

Tennessee and LSU were identified as teams that still have a chance, with LSU set to play Alabama this week. Ohio State was dismissed as a serious contender at this stage, while Texas Tech and TCU were also viewed as unlikely championship threats.

The Notre Dame-Miami matchup was highlighted as the biggest game of the week and one that could help decide the playoff picture. While any team in the top 10 was considered capable of winning the championship, the rankings of Indiana and Texas remained the most controversial choices.
