College Football Playoff Picture Remains Unclear Ahead of Pivotal Matchups
The first College Football Playoff show arrives tonight, but its initial top 12 may offer little clarity in such an unpredictable season. Including the first four teams out, 16 programs will effectively remain in contention.
Historically, only three teams outside the initial top 12 have gone on to make the playoff. Arizona State did so after winning the Big 12, while James Madison and Tulane accomplished it last year. For teams from the major conferences, missing tonight’s top 12 could be a strong indication that they will also miss the playoff.
However, this weekend’s results could quickly change the picture. Notre Dame faces Miami, with a Miami victory potentially securing its playoff position. A Notre Dame win would leave Miami with little room for another loss before the end of the season.
Alabama also plays LSU. If LSU loses, it will likely fall out of playoff contention. Georgia’s matchup with Mississippi carries similar stakes. A Mississippi loss would likely eliminate it, while a victory would give Georgia its second loss and put its position in jeopardy.
UCLA has quietly made significant strides and could be positioning itself as a top-five team. Its upcoming game against USC could even help move UCLA into the top three by the end of the season.
With so many important games still ahead, tonight’s rankings may ultimately prove meaningless. After Saturday’s results, the playoff field should become much clearer. Looking ahead to a potential 24-team playoff, a November rankings show focused on the teams just outside the field could carry even less significance.
