10. Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels got back to their winning ways, with a good ol' fashioned ass-whooping over Auburn in Week 9. Don't be fooled by the performance, though; this team still doesn't care about defense.

Ole Miss has struggled mightily throughout the campaign. They rank 97th in total defense, looking equally abysmal against the pass and rush. Moreover, they give up a staggering 42.4% on third-down conversions, putting them among the 30 worst schools in the country.

Ole Miss is holding steady in the AP Poll. With some challenging opponents on the immediate horizon, that grip is tenuous, at best.
1. Miami Hurricanes
It was supposed to be a lot easier than this. The Miami Hurricanes were the toast of the ACC and were supposed to run roughshod over the conference. Now, we don't even know if the Hurricanes have what it takes to close out the regular season without a loss or two.

Three weeks ago, Miami should have lost to FSU. It should have happened again on Saturday, but the Hurricanes prevailed over UNC. In both of those contests, the Canes' defense looked completely out of sorts, allowing suspect offenses too much room to move.

Miami will enjoy its run atop the standings, but it won't last. Nor can we take them seriously in the National Championship conversation.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
On two occasions now, the Ohio State Buckeyes have looked like a fringe playoff team. For some reason, people continue to evaluate this group as a legitimate contender.

Ohio State squandered its opportunity against USC. Their drives consistently came up short in the red zone, with three of their four trips ending in field goals. That's without considering the fumble they had in pus-territory or the 30 points they gave up on defense.

We're not taking anything for granted with the Buckeyes, even with a home-friendly schedule to close out the campaign. Considering their penchant for late-season collapses, we wouldn't be surprised to see this team fall completely out of the playoff picture.
3. Alabama Crimson Tide
It's a sad state of affairs when a bye week moves you up the rankings. That's the case for the Alabama Crimson Tide, who jumped one spot without even playing a snap in Week 9.

Alabama is being let off the hook too easily. Their offense has stagnated, with just one meaningful quarter of production over their last three games. At the same time, we've lost confidence in their defense. The Crimson Tide have struggled to contain some lesser-than opponents, and face one of the best in the country in Week 10.

Bama's ascent up the standings was built on faulty ground. We suspect they go tumbling after Week 10.
4. Texas Longhorns
Winners of two in a row, the Texas Longhorns have recaptured everyone's attention. That's going to make their fall from grace look so much worse.

Texas dispatched Mississippi State in Week 9, but still couldn't get anything going on offense. They totaled just 280 yards against one of the worst defenses in the Power 4, and still couldn't hold onto the ball for more than 27 minutes. Sadly, that's exactly what we've come to expect from this group.

The Longhorns play three of their next four away from home, including two straight against ranked opponents. Things only get worse from here.
5. Oklahoma State Cowboys
It's been a miraculous turnaround for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. After a disastrous 2025 campaign, OK State is back to its winning ways. Still, the Cowboys are flying too close to the sun right now, and they're about to come crashing back down to earth.

While not officially in the AP Rankings, the Cowboys have garnered votes in recent weeks. Unfortunately, those delusional voters are going to get a taste of reality over the coming weeks. Oklahoma State still doesn't play defense, giving up 51 points on nearly 600 yards to Iowa State.

The Cowboys are about to run a gauntlet of top Big 12 teams. Assuredly, we'll start to see some losses pile up.
6. North Carolina Tar Heels
The North Carolina Tar Heels are one of the most inconsistent teams in the country. We've seen them show up against premier competition, only to vacate the premises in games they should win. That makes it challenging to evaluate this team week to week, but the Tar Heels continue to get too much credit.

North Carolina held some decent offenses in check. At the same time, some pretty awful teams have put up crooked numbers against the Tar Heels. That dichotomy exists with their offense as well. They put up 35 points against Miami in Week 9, but couldn't get past 20 against Clemson earlier in the campaign.

Don't take the Tar Heels seriously. They've got four more chances to slip up before the end of the season.
7. James Madison Dukes
What an awful stretch of football by the James Madison Dukes.

After being embarrassed by Appalachian State in Week 8, the Dukes followed up with another disastrous loss against Troy last time out. In that contest, JMU was held scoreless in the second half and failed to score in overtime, despite only needing a field goal.

We expected James Madison to be in the running for the Group of 6 playoff spot. Instead, they'll have to fight their way back into the Sun Belt Championship Game.
8. Arizona Wildcats
We're going to exclude Isaiah Mizell from this overall analysis. Basically, he's the only thing going right for the Arizona Wildcats in recent weeks.

Zone would be in a much worse place if not for Mizell. Over the last three weeks, the wideout has accounted for 499 of the team's 1,388 total yards. Otherwise, there's been a complete lack of production from other players on the squad. Arizona mustered a laughable 12 rushing yards versus Texas Tech, and Noah Fifita hasn't been the X-factor the Wildcats desperately need him to be.

Over the next couple of weeks, Arizona has to navigate its way past some of the top defenses in the country. We don't think they pass the test.
9. Iowa Hawkeyes
Always the bridesmaid, the Iowa Hawkeyes might no longer deserve that distinction. Iowa is overvalued after dispatching a regression-bound Wisconsin side in Week 9.

The Badgers were punching way above their weight class. They hung tough versus UCLA before pulling off an outright upset over USC in Week 8. But with USC traveling across the country and playing out of its element, we knew they would come up short. That was contagious, as Wisconsin was destined to come up short against a desperate Iowa squad in Week 9.

Iowa still struggles on offense. Their passing game can't be expected to make substantive gains, and their rushing attack does just enough to avoid losing games. That will come back to haunt the Hawkeyes before the end of the season.
