Summer preview magazine season is officially in full swing, and college football guru Phil Steele has published his legendary annual schedule difficulty rankings for 2026. With power conference expansion and non-conference mega-games taking over Saturdays, these 15 programs are staring down the most punishing road to the postseason in the country.
15. LSU Tigers
SEC

Lane Kiffin’s first year in Baton Rouge is a baptism by fire. The Tigers open against Clemson, jump straight into SEC play against Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Alabama, and close November with back-to-back tests against Texas and Tennessee.
14. Northwestern Wildcats
Big Ten

David Braun’s squad gets a taste of every single titan in the expanded Big Ten. The Wildcats face road trips to Indiana, Oregon, and Ohio State, while hosting physical programs like Penn State and Iowa.
13. North Carolina Tar Heels
ACC

The Tar Heels have landmines planted all over their calendar. Opening the year against TCU, UNC gets hit with early matchups against Clemson and Notre Dame, hosts Miami in late October, and wraps up the regular season against in-state rival NC State.
12. Stanford Cardinal
ACC

Cross-country flight miles are going to stack up fast for the Cardinal this season. On top of navigating their ACC slate with games against Miami, Louisville, and SMU, Stanford has to make a high-stakes October road trip to South Bend to lock horns with Notre Dame.
11. Kentucky Wildcats

Will Stein’s crew has a brutal autumn lined up in Lexington. The Wildcats get hit with early back-to-back tests against Alabama and Texas A&M, take road trips to Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Missouri, and close out the year with their in-state rivalry against Louisville.
10. Florida Gators
SEC

Jon Sumrall’s era in Gainesville starts in the deep end of the pool. The Gators face a non-stop parade of ranked opponents, taking on Ole Miss, Texas, Georgia in Jacksonville, and Oklahoma over a grueling six-week stretch.
9. Purdue Boilermakers
Big Ten

Barry Odom is rebuilding the Boilermakers, but the 2026 schedule offers zero breathers. Purdue gets hit with non-conference neighbor Notre Dame, followed by grueling conference matchups against Penn State, Iowa, and defending champ Indiana.

Ryan Day’s Buckeyes have the talent to win it all, but their travel schedule is a marathon. Ohio State heads to Austin in September, visits Iowa and Indiana in October, travels across the country to face USC, and still has home games against Oregon and Michigan waiting down the stretch.
