Can the Knicks Overcome the Challenges of a Title Defense?

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Outspoken With Dan Sileo

Championship Pedigree Comes With Concerns for the Knicks

After progressing from the playoffs to the conference championship and ultimately winning a title, the question is whether the Knicks can remain championship contenders over the next few years.

Despite last season’s success, there are reasons for concern. Mike Brown helped get the Knicks across the finish line, while Jalen Brunson delivered an incredible season and playoff run before the team capped it off by beating the Spurs.

The Knicks have since lost Mitchell Robinson, who provided valuable depth. They could also struggle offensively if Brunson rolls an ankle, while the cat contract situation hangs over the team even as it celebrates by lifting the championship banner.

Still, the Knicks have championship pedigree, plenty of good players and meaningful roster depth. Tyler Cole could receive more playing time, while Jordan Clarkson and Jose Alvarado are capable of making an impact. Several important pieces from last season also remain in place.

The challenge is that winning a championship puts a target on a team’s back. Opponents visiting the Garden—and teams hosting the Knicks—will be especially motivated to beat the defending champions. Recent champions such as the Thunder, Celtics and Nuggets have also shown how difficult it is to repeat.

There may be concerns about the roster as a whole, but the Knicks cannot be counted out of the Eastern Conference if Brunson stays healthy and once again plays at an All-Pro level.
