The NBA's first round is about survival, but the second round is where pretenders get completely separated from actual title contenders. We just watched four teams get bounced from the Conference Semifinals, and for each of them, the exit was a loud reality check.

Some of these teams ran out of gas, some ran into absolute buzzsaws, and others simply watched their fatal flaws doom them on the big stage.

Now, the focus shifts immediately to July. Between aging stars on massive contracts, looming restricted free agency decisions, and superstars dealing with ongoing health questions, none of these franchises can afford to stand still.

We are auditing all 16 eliminated squads, ranking them by how chaotic their summer is about to be, and figuring out where they are headed next.
16. Golden State Warriors
Eliminated: Play-in Tournament

The dynasty is officially gasping for air in the meat grinder of the Western Conference. With Jimmy Butler recovering from a torn ACL and Stephen Curry battling a right knee injury, the Warriors' window feels like it has slammed shut. They are a lottery team for the second time in three years, and with 79% of the payroll tied up in three aging stars, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. has almost zero flexibility to add youth. Unless they can flip Draymond Green’s $27.7 million salary for a miracle, the Warriors are looking at a very painful transition era.

2025-26 Regular Season Record: 37-45
15. Phoenix Suns
Eliminated: 1st Round

The Suns managed to build a top-10 defensive identity under Jordan Ott, but the ceiling of this roster remains frustratingly low. Despite a 45-win season, they were swept by OKC and are now trying to move forward after big contracts for Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker bogged down the team's salary situation. Thanks to the Beal buyout, they are $18 million below the tax and $24.9 million below the first apron. That said, they have almost zero control over their future first-round picks over the next seven years. Moving Durant for Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks brought some grit, but this team lacks the high-ceiling gravity needed to contend. They are stuck in cap hell with a roster that is more grit than great.

14. LA Clippers
Eliminated: Play-in Tournament

Everything about the Clippers’ outlook is currently murky. While they pivoted toward a younger core by trading James Harden for Darius Garland, the ongoing investigation into Kawhi Leonard’s contract hangs over the franchise like a dark cloud. Leonard is still a surgical technician when on the floor, averaging 27.9 PPG this year, but at 35 years old, building around him with his injury history is a massive gamble. They have recouped some draft capital, but the power in the West might be too fast for this aging core.

13. Miami Heat
Eliminated: Play-in Tournament

Pat Riley is officially in Giannis-or-bust mode. The Heat overhauled their offense to rank first in pace, but their defense cratered late in the year, leading to a fourth straight play-in appearance. The future hinges entirely on whether they can leverage Tyler Herro and Andrew Wiggins into a blockbuster for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Without a massive talent injection, Miami is a play-in-treadmill team whose multiple skills among cornerstones like Bam Adebayo are being wasted in a series of first-round exits.

12. Los Angeles Lakers
Eliminated: Western Conference Semifinals

Getting completely swept out of the second round by OKC was a brutal reality check for a team that fought its way to a rock-solid 53-win season. The Lakers simply couldn't keep up with the youth and track-meet speed of the Thunder, allowing them to shoot the lights out from three over the four games.

Now, the entire future of the franchise rests on LeBron James' looming free agency and his upcoming contract decision. Whether LeBron returns for another run or forces a total reset, the front office has a microscopic window to completely overhaul a supporting cast that clearly hit its ceiling. While they have Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, beyond that, there are a lot of questions in Hollywood,

2025-26 Regular Season Record: 53-29
11. Orlando Magic
Eliminated: 1st Round

Orlando went all-in with the Desmond Bane trade, but a lack of urgency and offensive shortcomings led to another first-round exit. The core of Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs is elite, but the Magic are now the only NBA team with four players making over $30 million. They enter the offseason $16 million over the luxury tax. They have plenty of young talent on cheap deals, like Anthony Black, but they need to find a shooting off the bench before they can truly graduate from the rebuild phase into a championship contender. Not having a first-round pick until 2028 stings a bit, too.

10. Toronto Raptors
Eliminated: 1st Round

Toronto established itself as a top-ten defense this year and showed you can win in the NBA with a balanced roster, not loaded with stars. Scottie Barnes showed he is indeed a star as the best player on the court in their first-round exit against Cleveland. Even with Brandon Ingram missing the final two games of the series and Immanuel Quickley not suiting up, Toronto took the Cavs to the brink of elimination. That said, the Raptors are walking a financial balancing beam, but they control all of their own first-round picks and have the contracts to be aggressive in the trade market. With RJ Barrett playing the most efficient basketball of his career, Toronto has the foundation of a winner. They just need one more roster tweak to improve their outside shooting and join the East’s elite. The Raptors do have a disadvantage that no other team in the NBA faces, and that's convincing free agents that life in Canada can be pretty great.

9. Philadelphia 76ers
Eliminated: Eastern Conference Semifinals

Wasting a postseason run with a non-competitive 4-0 sweep at the hands of the Knicks is a total disaster scenario for Philly. Joel Embiid was visibly compromised from the opening tip, and his ongoing availability issues once again doomed the Sixers when it mattered most. With Paul George turning 36 years old to start next season, the window for this veteran core is slamming shut incredibly fast.

The front office needs to face the music and officially turn the reins of this team over to Tyrese Maxey, aggressively retooling the depth around their young star guard rather than praying for a perfectly healthy year from their aging big man.

8. Portland Trail Blazers
Eliminated: 1st Round

The Blazers won 42 games, their most since 2021, and the future looks incredibly bright under Tiago Splitter. Even with Damian Lillard sidelined by an Achilles injury, the young nucleus of Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, and Donovan Clingan has shown flashes of being a matchup nightmare. The emergence of Deni Avdija as a bona fide star also powered this young team. They are $31 million below the tax and have six tradable first-rounders. If Lillard returns at even 80% of his former self, matched with steady veteran guard Jrue Holiday in the backcourt, Portland is the sleeper powerhouse in waiting in the Western Conference.

7. Denver Nuggets
Eliminated: 1st Round

The Nuggets are the perfect example of how a lack of depth can kill a title window. Despite Nikola Jokic playing at an MVP level, the trade of Michael Porter Jr. for Cameron Johnson didn't provide the bench spark they expected. Denver is now at the second apron and faces a brutal decision on Peyton Watson’s restricted free agency. They have zero tradable first-round picks left, meaning this shakable bench is likely what Jokic is stuck with for the foreseeable future.

2025-26 Regular Season Record: 54-28
6. Houston Rockets
Eliminated: 1st Round

The Rockets’ decision to push their chips in for Kevin Durant nearly paid off, but their late-season surge without him proved their young engine is the real story. The lineup of Reed Sheppard, Amen Thompson, Tari Eason (RFA), Jabari Smith, and Alperen Sengun is a total mismatch for most teams. Houston is $24 million below the first apron and owns a pack of picks from Phoenix and Brooklyn, although they don't have a first-rounder this year. Whether they keep Durant or pivot back to the youth movement, the Rockets have a very high ceiling moving forward

5. Charlotte Hornets

Don't let the play-in loss fool you, the Hornets are a problem. Charlotte won 44 games this year, led by a healthy LaMelo Ball and a Rookie of the Year finalist in Kon Knueppel. They possess 13 players under contract, two top-20 picks in the 2026 draft, and $43 million in cap flexibility. This is a young engine that finally has the depth to match its star power. If Brandon Miller and Moussa Diabate take the next step, Charlotte is heading for a top-four seed in 2027.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves
Eliminated: Western Conference Semifinals

Minnesota looked like a legitimate threat until they ran out of answers in a 4-2 series loss to the powerful Spurs. Anthony Edwards did everything he could while heroically playing ton a pair of bad knees all postseason, but he was left operating as a one-man army. The complete postseason disappearance of Julius Randle, who shot just 39% from the floor in these playoffs, completely crippled the half-court offense.

With the roster getting older and former multi-time DPOY Rudy Gobert set to turn 34 years old to start next season, the front office will likely be open to trading Randle this summer to bring in younger assets and rejuvenate the core around Antman.

3. Boston Celtics
Eliminated: 1st Round

Blowing a 3-1 series lead to Philadelphia is a stain that won’t wash off easily. The Celtics slashed payroll to save $350 million, and while Jaylen Brown and Derrick White kept them competitive, the frontcourt void left by Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis was glaring. The good news? Boston is $34 million under the second apron and owns almost all their picks. They have the assets to be a verified powerhouse again, but they need to prove that this gap year didn't permanently break their confidence. Jayson Tatum's health looms large after the former MVP contender had to miss Game 7 against the Sixers.

2. Detroit Pistons
Eliminated: Eastern Conference Semifinals

The Pistons had a magical regular season, securing the top seed in the East with a stellar 60-win season, but their deep playoff run came to a heartbreaking halt in a blowout Game 7 loss against Cleveland. While the sting of turning the ball over 15 times in that final game will linger, Detroit's focus must shift immediately to locking down its core.

Jalen Duren is set to become a restricted free agent following a massive breakout season where he completely dominated the glass. Managing his incoming payday while keeping enough financial flexibility to put consistent shooters around Cade Cunningham is the biggest challenge facing this front office this summer. With a young core and a superstar lead guard making a massive playoff performance statement, things look very promising in Motown.

1. Atlanta Hawks
Eliminated: 1st Round

The Trae Young trade was a masterstroke. Since shipping Young to Washington, the Hawks have become a defensive powerhouse, ranking eighth in the league down the stretch. Atlanta flipped a switch with the fourth-best record since the All-Star break. They have Jalen Johnson as an All-Star engine, 11 players under contract, and a 29.3% chance at a top-four pick in the lottery. Atlanta is the only playoff team with high-lottery capital and a clean cap sheet. They have the assets, the youth, and the flexibility to be the next great NBA dynasty.
