The regular season is in the rearview, and for 14 franchises, the focus has shifted from the hardwood to the draft board. This year’s lottery class is a fascinating mix of young cores searching for a missing piece and established past winners like the Bucks and Warriors suddenly finding themselves on the outside looking in.

Which of these teams is actually positioned to make a massive leap in 2027? Whether it’s finding a permanent star like NBA Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg or navigating a messy cap situation, these next few months will define the next step for these organizations.

While the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder were technically lottery teams, since they made the playoffs, we will leave them out of these rankings. We do, however, give a grade to every other lottery team's future, starting with the franchise that drew the short end of the stick.
14. Milwaukee Bucks
Grade: F

The Bucks are fighting the pull-down of an aging roster while the Giannis Antetokounmpo situation remains a daily talking point. It's hard to imagine they get top dollar for Giannis, considering the very public divorce that played out this season. They need to find perimeter youth to take the load off their veterans, but picking at No. 10 makes that a challenge. They are hunting for a late-blooming forward with shot-making upside, but unless they get a lottery miracle, Milwaukee’s future looks more like a retooling project than a title pursuit.

2025-26 Record: 32-50
13. Golden State Warriors
Grade: D-

The Warriors are trying to squeeze every drop out of the Steph Curry era, but the roster’s lack of length caught up to them this year. They need a high-IQ role player who can step into the rotation immediately, but they are also staring at a massive luxury tax bill and an aging core. The future depends on finding a ready-made contributor in the back half of the lottery, a task that has proven difficult for Golden State in recent years.

Without much youth or buying power it looks like a long year in the Bay.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 11

2025-26 Record: 37-45
12. Brooklyn Nets
Grade: D

Brooklyn was the only team in the top three odds to land the top pick that lacks a clear foundational cornerstone. They are deep into a total reconstruction, but they are currently an all-role-player squad in a star-driven league. The future grade is lower here because they are entirely dependent on lottery luck to find a new face of the franchise. Slipping to No. 6 didn't help that goal. The possibility of landing AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, or Cameron Boozer is gone. So a franchise face walking into the Barclays Center and giving the fans a reason to buy tickets again remains to be seen.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 6

2025-26 Record: 20-62
11. New Orleans Pelicans
Grade: D+

There is no other way to put it: the math behind the Pelicans' current draft situation is a total disaster. If Joe Dumars hadn't touched the pick cupboard after taking over in 2025, New Orleans would be sitting on the No. 5 and No. 8 picks in this draft. Instead, they’re walking into the night with zero first-rounders. They traded the Indiana pick (which became No. 5) back to the Pacers just before Haliburton tore his Achilles, then packaged their own selection (which became No. 8) to move up and grab Derik Queen last year. Queen has flashes of talent, but a complete misevaluation of that magnitude is a tough pill to swallow for a team that finished 26-56.

On the court, the core of Zion Williamson, Dejounte Murray, and Herb Jones actually played well together, posting a +9.4 net rating, but the roster depth just wasn't there. Zion is still a force, trailing only Giannis in paint points per game, and Saddiq Bey was a rock while averaging 18.9 PPG on nearly 38% from deep. But until they fix a rebounding unit that ranked 28th in the league, they’re going to keep wasting high-level individual seasons.

The health of Zion and Murray will dictate this team's success, but overall, they aren't a very impressive unit.

2026 Draft Lottery Slot: N/A (No First Round Pick)

2025-26 Record: 26-56
10. Miami Heat
Grade: C+

It’s rare to see Miami in this position, and you know Pat Riley is looking for a very specific type of grit. They need a tough-minded guard who can thrive in on defense and provide instant offense off the bench. The Heat have a history of finding lottery steals, and the future of Heat Culture depends on finding a secondary creator to help Bam Adebayo.

If Miami can find a way to land Giannis Antetokounmpo, they shoot near the top of this list.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 13

2025-26 Record: 43-39
9. Sacramento Kings
Grade: B-

Sacramento’s future is tied to finding a long-term backcourt partner for their current core. They have their choice of pro-ready freshmen guards in this range, and adding a multi-level creator like Darius Acuff Jr. would fix their late-game offensive stagnation. The Kings have a high floor, but their ceiling in a stacked Western Conference depends on landing a lead guard who can dictate game flow and handle the physicality of the postseason.

Sacramento was ravaged by injuries, perhaps worse than any other team in the league in 2025-26, and should be able to bounce back next season. They also have a bunch of draft picks.

2026 NBA Draft Slot: No. 7

2025-26 Record: 22-60
8. Memphis Grizzlies
Grade: B-

The Grizzlies are entering a transition era as they prepare for the possibility of life after the current regime. The No. 3 pick represents a chance to reset with a pro-ready player that will immediately make an impact. Memphis has already added interior muscle with Zach Edey, but they lack the downhill pressure needed to keep defenses off-balance. The future can be bright if they can land a high-IQ playmaker with one of their three picks in the top 32 (3, 16, and 32).

The grade is somewhat tempered by the looming uncertainty of their veteran core after moving on from a bunch of players the past two years, and what's next for Ja Morant.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 3

2025-26 Record: 25-57
7. LA Clippers
Grade: B

It is genuinely wild that the Clippers missed the playoffs with a 42-40 record and yet are walking into June with a top-five pick. Usually, a lottery finish for this group would mean a massive win for Oklahoma City, the result of that 2019 blockbuster swap involving Paul George and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but Lawrence Frank pulled off a masterclass in asset recovery. By sending Ivica Zubac to Indiana, they recouped a pick that turned into the No. 5 overall selection after Tyrese Haliburton’s injury sent the Pacers into a tailspin.

On the floor, the old Clippers are starting to look a lot younger. Since December, they were the fourth-best team in the West (36-19), largely because they stopped leaning solely on vets and let guys like Kobe Sanders and Bennedict Mathurin run. Mathurin, specifically, was a revelation after the trade, putting up 17.2 PPG and looking like a long-term fixture. Picking up 26-year-old Darius Garland for 36-year-old James Harden also furthered the youth movement in LA. It appears Garland is a big part of the future for LA's other basketball team.

The real question is the ceiling for Kawhi Leonard. He’s still an elite producer, averaging 27.9 PPG on top-ten efficiency, but at 35 years old and with a massive $63 million per year extension on the table, the front office has to decide if he’s the guy to lead this new, younger core.

All in all, the Clippers have to feel pretty good going into next season.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 5 (via IND)

2025-26 Record: 42-40
6. Dallas Mavericks
Grade: B

The Cooper Flagg era has officially begun, and even with lower lottery odds, the Mavericks’ future is the envy of the league. They are looking for a strong-bodied wing or a versatile defender like Brayden Burries to protect their new star. With Kyrie Irving still providing a veteran presence, Dallas is in a position to build around Flagg. Any talent added through the No. 9 pick is just a multiplier for a roster that already has a very high ceiling.

Under the leadership of Masai Ujiri, Dallas is in a position to add this offseason and knowing how aggressive Masai can be, they will likely do just that.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 9

2025-26 Record: 26-56
5. Charlotte Hornets
Grade: B

Charlotte is officially a team on the rise, and even though they didn't move out of 14, having the longest odds of securing the top pick, their long-term trajectory is looking better than it has in a decade. The front office has done a great job assembling an exciting young core featuring LaMelo Ball, Moussa Diabate, and Brandon Miller, giving the franchise a legitimate foundation of star power to build around. With Ball’s elite playmaking back at full strength and Miller evolving into a dominant wing scorer, the Hornets finally have the top-end talent required to climb the Eastern Conference standings. This pick is all about finding a complementary piece to bolster a rotation that is already proving it can compete with the elite teams in the league.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 14

2025-26 Record: 44-38
4. Indiana Pacers
Grade: B

The Pacers are arguably the unluckiest team in the lottery because, on paper, they shouldn't even be in this conversation. A season derailed by a major injury to Tyrese Haliburton masked the reality that this roster is actually loaded with high-end talent. With Pascal Siakam and Ivica Zubac already in the fold, Indiana should be hunting for a title, not a top-five pick. However, the front office committed a massive blunder by trading away their unprotected 2026 first-rounder, which eventually landed with the Clippers, to recoup a lower pick in 2025. Zubac is nice to have, but a top-five pick would have been much better.

They bet on their own long-term success and lost the gamble when Haliburton’s injury sent the team into a tailspin, resulting in a 19-63 record and the loss of the No. 5 overall pick. Despite the draft-day sting, this core was in the Eastern Conference Finals just two years ago, and with a healthy roster, they remain an immediate threat in 2027.

2025-26 Record: 19-63
3. Chicago Bulls
Grade: B+

Chicago is in the middle of a messy transition. New EVP Bryson Graham inherited a roster with enough free agents to field an expansion team and only a couple of long-term pieces like Josh Giddey. The Bulls are desperate for a defensive anchor like Aday Mara to protect the paint, but will have even more options after bucking the odds to land at No. 4. Yes, the Bulls are still trying to find a direction and an identity after years of treading water and moving up in the draft certainly helps them to start paddling. Oh ya, they also have Portland's No. 15 pick.

Chicago also has a lot of cap space, so making some splashes in free agency could fast-track its path to the playoffs.

2026 NBA Draft Slot: No. 4

2025-26 Record: 31-5
2. Utah Jazz
Grade: B+

The Jazz are officially done with the rebuild and are looking for one final swing for the fences to join the West's contenders. Pairing a high-motor guard like Darryn Peterson with their current frontline of Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen would create a core that few teams will want to face. Utah has done a great job of accumulating assets; now they just need to put them all together.

Utah has always been a well-run organization, and with some flexibility and a core intact, if they can stay healthy, the future looks bright.

2026 NBA Draft Lottery Slot: No. 2

2025-26 Record: 22-60
1. Washington Wizards
Grade: A

Washington is coming off a historic 1-26 stretch to end the 2025-26 season, but the outlook isn't nearly as bleak as the record suggests. By pairing Trae Young and Anthony Davis, the Wizards have established an elite veteran floor; they just lack the high-ceiling wing to tie the room together. Landing the No. 1 pick means AJ Dybantsa is coming to the Nation's Capital. He is a polished three-level scorer who will turn this offense into a dangerous unit almost immediately.

Even with a new Big Three, Washington has room to add pieces. They are in great financial shape, with a $15 million non-tax midlevel exception available in free agency and also two large trade exceptions of $26.8 and $13.5 million.
