5 NBA Teams To Fade at the Break
The Los Angeles Lakers are sitting in the West's top five with a 33-21 record, but the profile underneath looks like a team the market keeps overpaying for. That theme shows up all over the board this week. Good records. Shaky foundations. And a lot of close-game magic that usually doesn't last.

Pythagorean record is a quick lie detector. It estimates how many games a team should have won based on points scored and allowed. When the actual record is way better than the pythagorean record, you're usually looking at a team living on thin margins.

1. Los Angeles Lakers (33-21)
Pythagorean Record: 27-27 | Luck Factor: +6 wins

Regular Season Wins 48.5 | Over -142 | Under +116

The Lakers' resume screams contender, but a 33-21 record vs. a 27-27 pythagorean record is a major red flag. They're 8-1 in games decided by five points or fewer, and that .889 close-game win rate is the kind of heater that cools off fast. The kicker is the efficiency profile: a +0.0 net rating with a winning record is not what a true top-tier team looks like. Even with Luka Doncic at 32.8 points and 8.6 assists per game, Los Angeles has been winning like a coin-flip team that keeps landing heads.
2. Chicago Bulls (24-31)
Pythagorean Record: 21-34 | Luck Factor: +3 wins

Regular Season Wins 33.5 | Over +100 | Under -122

The Chicago Bulls are the ugly fade, but it's still a fade. The Bulls are 24-31 despite a 21-34 Pythagorean record, and their recent form has been a full-on collapse at 1-9 in their last ten. They've also been propped up by tight finishes at 12-7 in close games, which is a dangerous crutch for a team with a -3.7 net rating. Matas Buzelis is averaging 15.2 points per game and has recently posted 18.8 over his last five, yet the market keeps hanging numbers on this as a stable team. It's not, and 20-34 against the spread is the receipt.
3. Orlando Magic (28-25)
Pythagorean Record: 26-27 | Luck Factor: +2 wins

Regular Season Wins 45.5 | Over +108 | Under -132

The Orlando Magic's record looks solid, but a 28-25 record vs. a 26-27 pythagorean record suggests they've been a little too clean in the spots that swing betting results. They're 11-5 in close games, good for a .688 close-game win rate, and that's the exact range that tends to regress. The Magic also have a -0.1 net rating, which is essentially dead-even basketball dressed up as a winning team. Desmond Bane is trending up at 22.7 points per game over his last ten, and Anthony Black is at 16.1 points and 4.0 assists per game, but this is still a thin-margin group. When the market prices them like a clear playoff-level team, I'm looking to the other side.
4. Portland Trail Blazers (27-29)
Pythagorean Record: 25-31 | Luck Factor: +2 wins

Regular Season Wins 40.5 | Over -104 | Under -118

Portland's record is close to what it should be, but the betting market has been a different story. The Trail Blazers are 20-35 against the spread, and that's the simplest reason they keep ending up on this list. They've played a tough schedule with a 0.91 strength of schedule, yet the underlying performance still isn't strong with a -1.9 net rating. Deni Avdija has been a monster at 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game, but in his last five, scoring is down to 17.0 points per game, which matters when the offense needs him to be superhuman. Toumani Camara's 13.1 points per game help, but this team has not been consistently a "get to the window" team all season.
5. Toronto Raptors (32-23)
Pythagorean Record: 30-25 | Luck Factor: +2 wins

Regular Season Wins 46.5 | Over -110 | Under -110

Toronto is the lightest fade on the card, but a 32-23 record vs. a 30-25 pythagorean record still points to a team getting a little more in the standings than the possession-by-possession play. The Raptors have been solid, yet they're also 7-4 in close games, and that's another .636 close-game win rate that can swing back the other way. The profile is good, not dominant: a +1.5 net rating with a -0.28 strength of schedule leaves less room for error than the record suggests. Brandon Ingram is at 21.8 points per game, and Scottie Barnes is stuffing the stat sheet at 19.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, but Barnes' scoring has dipped to 17.5 points per game over his last ten. If the market keeps treating Toronto like a clear top-five East power every night, that's where the fade value shows up.
