13 Unwritten Rules of Pro Sports
We saw one of the cardinal unwritten rules of the NBA and basketball in general broken over the weekend. Minnesota Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels attempted and cashed a layup with 1.3 seconds left, while up big over the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series. While Nikola Jokic's reaction of chasing McDaniels down, getting in his face, and causing the benches to clear may have been a little much, the rule is to take the turnover or even throw the ball up as high as you can at that point.

This got us thinking about some other unwritten rules in pro sports, so let's start with the NBA, when hands are used for friendly slaps rather than potential Ric Flair-level chops.
The Hand-Off Ritual
NBA: Always Dap the Departing Teammate

Basketball is a game of momentum and chemistry, and nothing kills the vibes faster than a cold shoulder during a substitution. When a player heads to the bench, the incoming sub and the outgoing player should exchange a high five or a dap. It’s more than just a greeting; it’s a public acknowledgment of effort and a seamless transfer of energy. Even if a player is shooting 0-for-10 from the field or just committed a boneheaded turnover, ignoring the handoff is seen as a sign of locker-room friction that the cameras and the fans will pick up on instantly.

MLB: Stay Off the Mound and the Rubber

The pitcher's mound is a 10-inch-high island reserved exclusively for the man with the ball. Whether you’ve just been punched out or you’re a teammate heading to the dugout after a clean inning, never step on the mound or the rubber. For a pitcher, that dirt is their office and their sanctuary; having a position player trample through it is seen as a massive sign of disrespect. Aiming for the head or the hands is an absolute no-go because those are career-threatening areas. A shot to the ribs or the back sends the message without sending the player to the Emergency Room, keeping the justice of the game within professional boundaries.

While the NFL rulebook technically considers hair an extension of the jersey (meaning you can legally tackle a player by their locks), the unwritten code of the gridiron says otherwise. With stars like George Kittle and Alvin Kamara rocking long hair or dreads, the risk of a hair-pull tackle is at an all-time high. Yanking a player down by the scalp is viewed as a cheap shot that can lead to serious neck injuries or worse. It’s the kind of play that will get you labeled as a dirty player faster than a late hit out of bounds, even if the referees don't throw a flag.

MLB: Don’t Talk to a Pitcher Chasing History

When a starting pitcher has a no-no going through five or six innings, the dugout becomes the quietest place on Earth. In the NHL, the only trophy that matters is the Stanley Cup. When a team wins the Eastern or Western Conference, they are presented with the Prince of Wales Trophy or the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, respectively. The unwritten rule? Do not touch them. Most captains will stand near the trophy for a photo but refuse to lift it or even lay a finger on it. The superstition is that touching the secondary prize is bad luck for the Finals.
