Rays vs. Guardians: Windy Weather Shapes Crucial Game

Segment Spotlight: Quick Hits From Game Time Decisions

Strong Winds and Bullpen Questions Shape the Guardians-Rays Matchup

The 8 o’clock start appears better for avoiding the worst of the rain, but strong winds remain a concern at Progressive. Gusts could reach 40 miles per hour, with sustained winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour blowing in from the lake. That could prevent the ball from traveling well and make seven total runs difficult to reach without plenty of singles and doubles.

Wind and cold weather are unlikely to stop the game from being played. Tampa Bay could be due for an offensive breakout, although the conditions do not create an ideal hitting environment for either team. The series has felt like a back-and-forth battle, making it difficult to see either side winning three consecutive games.

A Cleveland victory would give the Guardians a 3-1 series lead. Historically, 75% of teams taking a 3-1 lead in a best-of-seven LCS have gone on to win, making this a major opportunity for both teams to seize momentum.

If the weather changes and the game is postponed until Saturday, Cleveland could benefit from the additional rest. The Guardians have repeatedly relied on many of the same bullpen arms and could use a day off. Tampa Bay might also move away from Sean Armstrong and use another pitcher in a better spot.

Cleveland will need to piece together nine innings from its bullpen while deciding how to handle Martinez and his reverse splits. Martinez pitched 13 scoreless innings across two starts against Cleveland this season, facing the Guardians once in Saint Pete and once in Cleveland. That history could give Tampa Bay an advantage.

The Rays’ biggest problem has been their offense. Caminero is 1-for-10, while Aranda is 1-for-15 and continues to experience difficult-to-predict hot and cold stretches. Tampa Bay was a strong offensive team during the season, but its lineup has recently been almost completely shut down.

The Rays also struck out 13 times against Cleveland and Gavin Williams in their previous game. That was their second-highest strikeout total in a game this season, behind only their March 30 opener against the Brewers.
